Construction accidents: Man killed while using cherry picker

On Behalf of | May 17, 2016 | Construction Workers' Accidents

While most people are aware that every job holds its own risks, some may be unfamiliar with the many deadly risks that construction workers face. Unfortunately, construction accidents can often have deadly consequences, leaving family members wondering how they will cope with the loss of their loved one. In fact, investigators in California are conducting an investigation into a recent accident that resulted in a worker’s death.

The accident happened at a California construction site one morning in mid-May. According to reports, a middle-aged male worker was on top of a piece of equipment known as a cherry picker. Sadly, he apparently became pinned between the equipment and the cement ceiling.

Several of his co-workers witnessed the accident and removed him from the equipment. Despite efforts to resuscitate the man, he passed away as a result of injuries suffered in the accident. Officials are waiting to release the man’s identity until his family can be notified. As in most cases involving a workplace fatality, the incident is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as well as local organizations.

Because of many different dangers facing people in the workplace, California requires employers to provide workers’ compensation insurance benefits. These benefits assist with medical bills and lost wages in the event of construction accidents — or other workplace incidents — that result in injury.  In the case of a fatality, these benefits also provide for funeral expenses. Because the last thing a grieving family wants to deal with is an insurance company, many request that an experienced attorney help them fight for the compensation they deserve.
