Construction accidents: Man killed by falling debris

On Behalf of | Aug 22, 2016 | Construction Workers' Accidents

While all jobs in California hold some degree of risk to a worker’s personal safety, some are riskier than others. For example, construction accidents can be caused by a variety of safety risks, including falls, electrocution and possible harm due to the heavy equipment used. Unfortunately, one out-of-state family is now likely wondering what — if anything — could have prevented an accident that resulted in their loved one’s death.

The accident happened one day in mid-August at an excavation site. The 49-year-old victim was working at G & F Septic. According the reports, he was injured when material from the excavation fell out of a trailer and struck him.

The debris is said to have included large objects, including trees. Reports regarding the incident claim that the man died at the work site, shortly after the accident occurred. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is set to investigate the incident; it typically has up to six months to complete an investigation and release findings. A violation of health or safety standards could result in citations and/or fines levied against the company.

While an investigation can help prevent similar accidents in the future, it will likely do little to help a family grieving the unexpected loss of a loved one. They may also struggle with the financial fallout of their loss. Fortunately, workers’ compensation insurance benefits can help with such consequences. Because of the complexity of the claims process, many victims of construction accidents in California — including surviving family members — ask for help from an attorney who understands how the process works.
