The vast majority of people in California take measures to protect their safety. They lock doors at night and only drive with the seatbelts fastened, for examples. However, there are some dangers that are unavoidable — many of which appear in the workplace. Unfortunately, a recent report that there was an increase in the number of fatal workplace injuries in 2015.
The report was the first of its kind released by the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries provided by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. While the fatality rate decreased from 3.43 to 3.38 per 100,000 workers who work full-time, the overall number of fatalities increased from 4,821 to 4,836. The number of 2015 fatalities is the highest since 2008.
Age and ethnicity proved to be a factor. Large number of fatalities seen in groups comprised of Latinos or Hispanic as well as in workers who were 65 years old older. Those who drive tractor-trailers or other drivers of heavy trucks saw the most fatalities.
The men and women in California who die as a result of fatal workplace injuries are more than just numbers in a report. Many leave behind grieving family members who must cope with the unexpected loss of their loved one. For many, coping includes managing the financial consequences of an unexpected death, including loss of wages and funeral expenses. While many of these surviving family members are entitled to workers’ compensation insurance benefits, they may be unaware of how to ensure they receive fair compensation.
