Crash seriously injures California worker

A car struck and injured a Caltrans worker while he was on the job at a roadside construction site, according to the California Highway Patrol. Although it could be considered a hazardous work environment, the injured man was standing behind traffic cones.

CHP said the accident happened on Oct. 31 on the Murray Road overpass of U.S. Highway 101 in McKinleyville. The injured worker was standing behind a line of traffic cones performing traffic control for a construction crew that was working on the roadway. An 84-year-old man from McKinleyville driving a 1998 Cadillac sedan struck the worker, severely injuring him.

Medical personnel took the injured worker by ambulance from the construction site to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. His injuries were serious enough that doctors there had him transported by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. According to a release, the father of four was in the intensive care unit listed in stable condition as of Nov. 1. His wife was reportedly by his side.

Authorities closed the Murray Road overpass for several hours to investigate. CHP said that drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.

Construction site accidents, particularly those that expose workers to moving vehicles, can result in serious injuries. Those injuries can leave a worker and their family struggling to cope with high bills for medical and rehabilitative care at a time when the person is unable to work and may lose income. An experienced attorney could protect the rights of a client injured on the job. They may be able to handle the details involved with obtaining maximum workers’ compensation benefits. An attorney could also investigate a case to determine all the negligent parties and pursue a legal claim against them for fair compensation.
