As people in California go through their everyday lives, they may overlook some of the hazards that they face. Fortunately, serious accidents happen relatively rarely. When they happen in the workplace, however, injured workers or family members of victims of fatal accidents likely qualify for workers’ compensation insurance benefits. The family of one man may need these benefits after a recent accident resulted in a fatality.
An emergency worker who responded to the scene says the accident happened just before noon one morning mid-May. According to reports, part of the man’s clothing became entangled in the mechanism that operated an open lift. Although the man tried to free himself by grabbing onto a concrete floor in an attempt to rip the clothing free, he was unable to free himself.
Others at the scene were able to stop the lift, but the man fell approximately 20 feet. Reports indicate that the man struck several objects as he fell. Emergency workers worked to save his life for several minutes, but he passed away as a result of the injuries he suffered in the fall.
Employees often face unexpected hazards as they complete their job responsibilities. Many who are injured face financial difficulties as a result of medical expenses and lost wages. In the event of a fatality, families are also left with funeral expenses. Fortunately, California requires employers to provide workers’ compensation benefits that help injured workers and extend to certain family members in the event of a fatality. Many who deserve such compensation seek the guidance of an experienced attorney to help them seek a fair settlement.
