All jobs hold a certain amount of risk. Unfortunately, many of these risks are due to the unpredictable actions of others. Police in California as well as officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are currently investigating an accident that resulted in the loss of one man’s life and caused significant workplace injuries to a CalTrans employee.
The accident happened one morning in early July. According to reports, a CalTrans crew was inspecting a guardrail when the driver of a pickup truck lost control. The driver reportedly swerved when he saw the crew, causing the truck to flip before landing upright. A passenger in the truck passed away.
The truck also struck a CalTrans worker who suffered serious injuries. Witnesses say that the worker was crushed and likely has two broken legs. The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and OSHA.
The injured worker is lucky to be alive after being struck by a pickup truck; however, the workplace injuries he suffered likely require extensive medical treatment and a long period of recovery during which he will be unable to work. Depending on the severity of his injuries, he may never be able to return to work in the same capacity. Fortunately, he likely qualifies with workers’ compensation insurance benefits. This insurance, which California employers are required to provide for employees, cover medical bills and lost wages following a workplace accident. A professional with experience with the compensation process can help ensure that an injured worker is treated fairly.
