Construction accidents: Flagger struck by car dies

On Behalf of | Aug 11, 2016 | Construction Workers' Accidents

Those who work road construction in California likely encounter others who are not as concerned about worker safety as they should be. Drivers who are distracted or fail to heed signs warning about upcoming repairs can cause construction accidents with serious consequences. One out-of-state family is familiar with this possibility after their loved one was fatally struck by a car.

Reports indicate that the accident happened in late July. The victim, a 63-year-old man, had worked for the Department of Transportation for approximately 20 years and had been promoted two times during his employment. Unfortunately, he was allegedly hit by a vehicle while directing traffic away from a crew performing maintenance.

The man died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident. Records indicate that this is the second fatality in the last three months for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The accident has prompted officials to remind motorists about the potential dangers of distracted driving, especially in construction zones.

The emotional ramifications of construction accidents are likely obvious for surviving family members. It is easy, however, for some to overlook the potential financial ramifications of such an unexpected loss. Many families in California find themselves unable to manage funeral expenses and loss of wages. To help cope with expenses stemming from work-related accidents, states require employers to provider workers’ compensation employment benefits that provide for many of these burdens. Because the compensation process can be overwhelming in a time filled with grief, a professional with experience with such benefits can help.
