Many California workers put their lives at risk every day simply by carrying out their work-related duties. In particular, individuals who work on roadway construction are especially at risk due to the equipment and machinery they use as well as the possibility of being hit by vehicles whose drivers do not slow down or heed other safe practices. Unfortunately, the latter hazard can cause serious workplace injuries.
It was recently reported that a worker in another state suffered serious injuries in this type of scenario. Apparently, the man was standing on or near the roadway and getting ready to work on paving the road when the accident took place. A woman driving a vehicle collided with a street sweeper and then hit the construction worker. It did not appear that any other workers were involved in the incident.
The man was taken from the scene to an area hospital to be treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The driver suffered minor injuries and was also taken for treatment. Another worker on the site stated that he had almost been struck by vehicles many times over the course of his career. Authorities believe that distracted driving played a role in this recent injury-causing accident and are continuing to investigate. Charges were pending against the driver at the time of the report.
Workplace injuries can result from a variety of situations no matter what type of environment individuals work in. Vehicles obviously pose a substantial threat to roadway construction workers, and while a driver may be at fault for the incident, injured California workers may still have the ability to obtain workers’ compensation. These benefits can often help with financial hardships that result from work-related accidents.
