California teen loses hand in construction accident

During Spring Break, many students travel to the beach or other destinations to celebrate a little time off from school. However, one teen in California decided to use his vacation to work at a construction site. Unfortunately, that decision proved tragic as he lost his right hand in a construction accident. Now, he and his family are having to cope with the aftermath and how to move forward after this horrific event.

According to reports, the young man from San Anselmo is a high school senior who maintains a 4.0 grade point average and participates in his school’s track and soccer teams. During his Spring Break this year, he and his younger brother were working at a North Bay construction site when a terrible accident occurred. No details were provided in the news report about the accident and specifically what happened to cause the boy’s hand to be severed at the wrist. The victim’s aunt said the young man’s brother tried to help him, but there was really nothing he could do.

The boy’s aunt also spoke to reporters about her nephew’s condition, his bravery throughout the ordeal and the fact that he still has a long road of recovery ahead. She has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for a prosthetic, which can run as high a $200,000. The boy’s community rallied in support and at last report had come close to reaching their goal.

Whenever a worker is injured in a construction accident in California or any other state, he or she usually has the option to receive workers’ compensation to help offset the economic impact of the incident. However, if the accident occurred through the negligence or wrongdoing of someone else, then the victim may also be able to file a personal injury suit against the third party. An experienced personal injury attorney would be able to analyze a victim’s claims, advise the client of his or her available options and work to help secure compensation for the extensive medical bills that usually follow such a tragic event.
