A number of serious hazards exist on construction sites. In fact, construction accidents take place far too often, and it is not unusual for serious or even fatal injuries to result. It is important for workers to take necessary precautions when on the job, but even some incidents cannot be avoided.
It was recently reported that a construction accident in California resulted in the death of one worker. The worker was part of a construction crew working in the front yard of a home when he became stuck in a trench. The trench had partially collapsed causing the man to be trapped approximately 10 feet down and up to his chest in dirt. It was unknown at the time of the report whether the man had been in the trench working when the collapse occurred or if he fell in.
Firefighters worked for 40 minutes to rescue the man, but they were unsuccessful. Unfortunately, the dirt put too much pressure on the man’s body, and he suffered fatal injuries as a result. His body was recovered from the trench, and it was noted that the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the incident.
The family of this California worker may never have expected to hear such tragic news, though they likely knew that construction accidents happen all the time. Now, they must work to contend with the difficulties that their loved one’s sudden death could easily cause. It is possible that they could qualify for survivor’s benefits through workers’ compensation, and it may be wise for them to gain information on this possible avenue.
