Toxic exposure to carbon monoxide affects 2 California workers

On Behalf of | Jul 15, 2019 | Toxic Exposure

Everyone typically wants to make it home from a day at work without having suffered any serious injuries or other setbacks. Unfortunately, numerous hazards affect workers in all industries, and a sudden and unexpected incident could cause harm to workers. For instance, toxic exposure could come on suddenly and leave workers needing medical attention.

It was recently reported that two workers in California needed medical help after an incident on the job. Apparently, the two individuals worked for a plumbing company and had started a job at an airport for the airline’s caterers. The job involved replacing the underground sewer pipes, and while they were conducting their duties, the workers were exposed to a significant amount of carbon monoxide due to using their equipment in a confined space.

The situation resulted in one worker losing consciousness, and emergency crews came to the scene. It was unclear how they were alerted the workers’ distress. One worker had to remain in the hospital for two days after the incident. It was noted that Cal/OSHA fined the catering company for failing to inform the plumbing company about the confined space hazards, and the plumbing company was also fined for various violations relating to working in confined spaces.

These California workers are undoubtedly fortunate that the toxic exposure did not lead to fatal outcomes, but they may still suffer lasting effects. If they feel it could suit their situations, it may benefit them to gain information on how workers’ compensation benefits may apply to their ordeal. Awarded benefits could allow them to make up for lost wages, medical expenses and other similar damages resulting from the incident.
