This time of year is often associated with family traditions. It is typically a time to which families look forward and plan for year round. Unfortunately, it is a time now marked by tragedy for one family in California following a tragic car accident. Police believe that alcohol was a factor and have made an arrest.
The incident happened on a Friday in late November. According to reports, a 31-year-old father of four was driving a sedan with his young children. Police say that a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old male struck the sedan as it traveled through an intersection, causing the latter to catch fire.
Reports claim that the younger driver was both speeding and under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle ran a red light at the intersection, causing the collision. Two of the children in the vehicle, ages 4 and 2, died at the hospital while the father died at the scene. The other two children were injured in the accident.
The driver believed to have caused the car accident has since been arrested, charged with gross vehicular manslaughter. The family members of the deceased victim are now forced to come to terms with an unexpected, preventable loss. While the emotional consequences of such a loss are obvious, many families also experience significant financial hardship as a result of lost wages, hospital bills and funeral expenses. Though it will likely do little to ease their sense of loss, many victims of negligence in California often choose to pursue justice by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against those believed to be responsible for their loved ones’ death; an attorney with experience with such cases can help families fully understand their options and choose a path that is most appropriate for their individual circumstances.
